Another successful "The Handbuilt Home" build!

I make no excuses for it, I have a huge builders crush on Ms. Ana White! If I could meet her in person one day, I'd be over the moon excited about it.  She keeps coming close - her latest appearance will be at a Home Depot in the Seattle area and although that's probably as close as she'll ever come to my neck of the woods, it's still not close enough for me to justify driving the 6 hours to.

Anyway, back to the business at hand, I just wanted to post my latest finished project on my own blog after posting it at! I'll add pictures to the portfolio section of my website as well.  It's sometimes a pain to post this stuff in all the places I do, but I guess it's all worth it in the end, right!?

From page 37 of Ana's book, The Handbuilt Home:

I snapped a picture straight from her book

and now my smaller, greener version:

The shelf was built for a client of mine who's brother sadly passed away after losing a battle to brain cancer, the same type of cancer my own husband has been afflicted with.  Allen's brother Loran battled for 11 years with this cancer and Allen himself has brain cancer as well.  It's a scary, tragic, awful disease and I took great honor in building this memorial shelf for Allen and his brother.

I will hopefully be posting a picture of the small urn with the shelf soon, but until then; Love your family to the best of your ability, tell them often because you never know when their, or your time is up.

I have to admit I have a total builders crush on miss Ana as well. Funny thing, I keep hoping I could meet her in Seattle too. However, I live in Spokane and it's quite a trip for a woman with a broken ankle. Do you live close to Spokane?? I love your mirror. I've been planning on building this one too. Do you get the mirror cut at Lowes or HD??

Hi Katie! I bought the mirror pre-cut in a 12x12 size. It just so happened to work out for this project because I changed the dimensions. I live down in Hermiston, OR so I'm about three hours from Spokane! I used to live in North Idaho, up by Athol when I was younger. My husband used to work in North Spokane at Alton's Tire!! I would LOVE to go and see Ana, but my finances are just not going to allow me to do it. It's hard to justify that kind of money for a few hours at a Home Depot. If she came to Spokane, I'd go there though! ;-)
